Manzanillo-Havana train derailed with 300 passengers on board – 2024-04-01 00:50:42

About 300 passengers who were on board the train that covered the route between Manzanillo and Havana on the afternoon of this Tuesday, March 26, got a scare after it partially left the tracks shortly after starting its trip.

According to the official media CMKX Radio Bayamothe incident occurred after the train left the terminal shortly after 1:25 pm, when cars one and two of train number 17 ended up leaving the tracks.

Fortunately, because the train was just beginning its journey, it was moving at low speed, so the incident did not cause any injuries.

Due to the accident, a delay of several hours was experienced, as some heavy equipment had to be mobilized to the site to return the carriages to their position.

According to the head of the Manzanillo Station, Rafael Pérez Ortiz, workers from the Roads and Bridges Business Unit of Yara, Bayamo and Mabay worked together to “assemble” the affected cars on rails.

Protocol dictates that these wagons must be taken to a workshop to undergo a technical inspection before certifying their correct operation and returning them to the tracks, a lengthy process that can take almost all day.

The authorities also indicated that a commission made up of experts from the Granma Provincial Railway Directorate and experts from the Ministry of the Interior (Minint) went to the scene to determine the causes that led to the derailment on the Manzanillo station platform. For now, no hypotheses have been ruled out, including the possibility of sabotage.

What happened generated astonishment among the Cuban community, who could not help but consider that what happened was a bad sign.

“If life gives me the opportunity to continue in it, that will no longer be my day to arrive in the capital. Gentlemen, luck is not tempted to evil,” said one of the Internet users on Facebook.

Others did not hesitate to point out the current conditions of many services on the Island, stating that this was due to the poor maintenance that vehicles and roads receive in Cuba due to the current economic crisis.

“Nothing works on Prison Island, not the railroad lines, not the train, not anything, but grateful to God that everyone came out unharmed,” added another user.
