Many women in particular report side effects of vaccines, but we don’t know why

Investico is the research platform for Faithful, EenVandaag and the Groene Amsterdammer. The platform studied all clinical trials of five corona vaccines; Pfizer / BioNtech, Moderna, AstraZeneca, Sputnik V and Janssen, as published in scientific journals. Not one of them reported the occurrence of side effects according to gender.

86.6 percent female

According to Investico, 26,000 reports have been received so far at the Dutch side effects center Lareb, with 152,000 side effects reported. 86.6 percent of the reporting persons were female. The same picture can be seen worldwide.

Do women get other side effects? So no research has been done on this. One explanation could be that many young female health workers have been vaccinated so far.

Smaller dose

But perhaps there is more to it. For example, women might be better off with a smaller dose.

According to Investico, research into a flu vaccine at the beginning of this century proved that young women in particular received much more vaccine than necessary. For the same degree of effectiveness, half a dose was sufficient, with fewer side effects.

In 2010, the World Health Organization recommended that physiological differences between men and women should be included as standard in future research.

“Are women more likely to ring the bell?”

“If women report more, we don’t know why,” says Lareb director Agnes Kant. “Do they experience more complaints, do they actually have complaints, do they raise the alarm sooner?”

According to Investico, serious side effects so far mainly affect women, such as thrombosis in combination with a low platelet count in the blood that is currently associated with the AstraZeneca vaccine.

Researcher Chahinda Ghossein-Doha of Maastricht UMC + tells the platform that the lack of gender-specific analyzes is a ‘missed opportunity’.

There has been a call for more research into the differences between men and women in healthcare for some time now. The Gender and Health Alliance already published a report on this in 2015.

This alliance was an initiative of WOMEN Inc. This includes medical specialists.

The care is mainly focused on men and that has serious consequences, the alliance reported. Because differences are not taken into account, misdiagnoses are often made and incorrect treatments given.
