JAKARTA – Hepatitis drugs are often not used. Diagnosis and screening become an obstacle so that it is not known who needs the drug. This was stated by the Chairman of the Expert Committee on Hepatitis and Digestive Infectious Diseases, David Handojo Muljono, during the World Hepatitis Day webinar, in Jakarta, Wednesday (28/7).
“The hepatitis drugs provided are not used because it is unknown who needs them,” he said. He said the handling of hepatitis had progressed, but not in accordance with the achievements and targets per year.
David assess, control and prevention of hepatitis has not been sustainable. According to him, prevention has not touched all target groups, especially to get hepatitis vaccination at the right time.

On the other hand, early diagnosis and detection, especially hepatitis C, has not been optimal. In addition to the high cost and sophisticated equipment, there is also a need for a limited number of professionals. They exist only in cities or universities.
“There is not any yet point of care for the wider community, so there are still gaps in handling,” he said.
On that occasion, the Minister of Health (Menkes), Budi Gunadi Sadikin plans to pay attention to the upstream sector in handling hepatitis by paying more attention to the promotive and preventive sectors. According to him, this method is more efficient and can reduce the severity of the disease.
“If the detection can be early, treatment is faster and can reduce the severity of the disease so that the person concerned will be productive in the future,” he explained. Budi ensured that the improvement and supervision of hepatitis vaccination would continue even during the Covid-19 pandemic. In August, he will closely monitor vaccinations, in addition to Covid-19.
“Currently being busy with Covid-19 vaccinations has resulted in less or less other vaccinations. But we must not ignore it,” he said.
