‘Many tenants in the private sector would rather buy’

This concerns almost 40 percent of tenants in the free sector, according to a poll by ABN Amro among about 500 tenants.

About 20 percent would rather rent a home in the social sector.

Too few affordable homes

The fact that many people are in an undesirable situation, according to the researchers, is mainly because there are too few social rental homes and affordable owner-occupied homes.

Owner-occupied homes have not only become more expensive, the requirements for a mortgage are also becoming increasingly strict. A ‘rental statement‘should help potential buyers get a mortgage, but in practice very few people make it make use of that possibility.

On the handbrake

Fewer people are also eligible for social housing because their income is too high. In addition, there are few homes available in that sector. And the waiting lists for social housing will probably only get longer, because a billion deficit is imminent for housing corporations.

Due to the high demand in recent years, rents in the free sector have skyrocketed. Interior Minister Kajsa Ollongren wants that increase one gear lower by setting a maximum increase for three years. The Labor Party thinks that is not enough, who wants to pull the handbrake with his own law.

Satisfied in the social sector

Tenants of social housing are much more satisfied with their homes than tenants in the private sector, the poll further shows. About two thirds of tenants in the social sector have a preference for this type of home.

A quarter of them would prefer to own a home. The free sector is not attractive to these tenants; only 6 percent of social tenants would rather live in the free sector.

ABN Amro further asked tenants which aspects of living are most important to them. The size of a home is the number one priority. Furthermore, it appears that the environmental characteristics are particularly important: no or limited noise pollution, type of living environment (city, village or countryside) and whether there is greenery in the area.

Less important

Accessibility by car, parking and typical features of the home, such as the kitchen and bathroom, are of less importance to the respondents.
