The end of the season is Easter Monday in most ski resorts. Tourers can expect up to three quarters of a meter of fresh snow at high altitudes.
For many ski enthusiasts this season, Holy Week and the following long Easter weekend is the last chance to buckle up and visit one of the numerous ski resorts in Salzburg. The weather forecasts also match this, which, apart from regional showers and at times brisk winds mainly from the north-west, promise mostly sunny conditions. The temperatures towards the end of Holy Week should be between five and ten degrees at 2000 meters above sea level.
Gerhard Hörwerter, spokesman for the SalzburgerLand Tourismusgesellschaft, gave the SN an overview of the open ski areas: According to this, the lifts are open until Easter Monday on the Hochkönig, in Flachau-Wagrain-St. Johann, Flachauwinkl-Kleinarl, Großarl and in Zauchensee (then partial operation until April 24th). Likewise in the Gastein valley on the Stubnerkogel, the Schlossalm, in Sportgastein as well as Angertal, Stubnerkogel and Dorfgastein with connection to the Grossarltal.
In Saalbach-Hinterglemm, Leogang, and Fieberbrunn, the areitXpress & trassXpress will run until Easter Monday. Skiing on the Kitzsteinhorn, on the other hand, runs until July 19th.
Ski tourers: beware of spontaneous avalanches
The lifts in the Weißsee Glacier World will remain open until April 24th, those in Mittersill-Hollersbach and in the Zillertal Arena Wald-Königsleiten until Easter Monday, the cable cars in the Wildkogel Arena Neukirchen and Bramberg until April 22nd.
Traditionally, the lifts in Obertauern are open until May 1st, like every year. At Grosseck-Speiereck, on the other hand, it should already be over on Easter Monday.
The best conditions await tourers in the high Tauern mountains after the fresh snow last weekend, although there are two things to keep in mind, as meteorologist Michael Butschek, who also writes the daily avalanche reports, explains: “For tours, the most important thing is the right time management important. This means that there is often hard crust in the morning, later it starts to snow due to the sun’s rays. Tours should therefore be ended in good time, as the danger of spontaneous avalanches increases due to the moisture and warming up.” In addition, the distance risk in the steep crust should be calculated and crampons should also be used.
As reported, such a spontaneous avalanche came off the Birgkar in the area of the “Jausenstein” on the Hochkönig on Sunday and caught five hikers, some of whom were hiking independently. Three of them were partially buried, some were able to deploy their avalanche airbags.
