The range of sports offered by SMS Gföhl extends from swimming, skiing, football, handball and running to music and dance as well as athletics. On the penultimate day of school, the sporting events of the school year were summarized with photos and short films and presented in a ceremony in the Gföhl town hall, which was filled to capacity.
Swimming & Winter Sports
At the swimming week for the first classes last autumn, numerous all-round swimmer badges were awarded. In winter sports, new competitions were discovered during the ski courses: the students took part in a ski cross competition in Annaberg for the first time. In addition to the students, the teachers also had great successes: sports teacher Sabine Wimmer won the Alpine skiing vice national championship title, sports coordinator Jürgen Surböck became national champion of the “Masters 40”.
Soccer & Running Competitions
The students completed numerous football tournaments – the training camp in Lindabrunn was also a must. The sports teachers Florian Bauer and Sebastian Starkl – themselves active players of the Kremser SC – as well as Clemens Döttl provided numerous interesting training sessions. Some top placings at state and national level were achieved in cross-country skiing: Annalena Dick won U14 gold at the state championships. More than 80 students from SMS Gföhl took part in the Leopoldi Run in Jaidhof on November 12, 2022.
Handball & Athletics
The young handball players with coach Roman Filz and national team goalie Thomas Eichberger were able to take part in eight “Final Four” tournaments: the girls in the third and fourth classes and the boys in the first and fourth classes were crowned undefeated national handball champions. In total, the students at SMS Gföhl took part in 70 handball games during the school year and covered around 2,200 kilometers by bus and train to the competition locations.
At the athletics state championships in Amstetten, the boys’ team from SMS Gföhl won the state championship title – it wasn’t quite enough for the girls, who finished first last year. Dominik Willner and Tobias Pemmer won gold in the individual ranking. Finally, the five-person state champion team from SMS Gföhl represented Lower Austria at the Federal Athletics Championships in Feldkirchen in Carinthia, where they won fourth place.
Awarded for excellence
Every year, the Sportmittelschule honors all pupils who have completed the subject “Sport and Exercise” with the grade “Very good” and have achieved a podium finish at least three times in the school year in non-internal sports competitions. Eight fourth-graders succeeded in doing this every single school year at SMS Gföhl – they were awarded an honorary prize: Zoe Bockberger, Celine Endl, Emanuel Halm, Marie Hofbauer, Johanna Hofer, Quentin Öhlzelt, Theresa Schindler and Kilian Schitzenhofer.
