“In the last editions there were people who bought food to give it to the volunteers and had to exchange it in the box,” he says. Paula Escorza, a 19-year-old girl who since she was 12 participates in food collections organized by the Food Bank of Seville. Many missed the direct donation, “people prefer to choose which product to donate.” On this occasion, they will be able to do so if they wish, since Operation Kilo Primavera will have a hybrid way of donating. Supermarket customers will be able to choose whether to donate at the checkout, with food directly or through Bizum or transfer. This is how Paula will explain it on June 27 and 28, along with a thousand other volunteers in the MAS, Alcampo and El Jamón stores.
Paula feels like going back to those days of emotions. Seville still has the two poorest neighborhoods in Spain, the need is evident. «I keep the smiles of the people you ask if they want to collaborate, to the illusion that makes them participate, “he says. She knows how to convey it. So much so that since she started volunteering as a child, several friends have accompanied her to try her experience. It is the case of Monica Martinez and Carmen Barrera, 19 and 18 years old respectively. The two went to the food sorting after the collection when they were in school, but it was because of Paula that they tried in stores. “It has nothing to do with it, it’s a lot of fun,” explains Carmen, “you know you are doing something good with a very small gesture».
The three attended this Wednesday the presentation at the Seville City Council of the 2022 edition of Operation Kilo Primavera, with the presence of the mayor of Seville, Antonio Muñozand the president of the Seville Food Bank Foundation, Agustin Vidal-Aragon. “This latest crisis has left us with groups that have not yet managed to return to normality,” explains Vidal-Aragón.
Along with the three volunteer representatives at the Town Hall act, a volunteer who will appear for the first time this weekend at a collection, Michael Moreno. “I wanted to participate in December but I got sick,” she laments. This is his chance. “It was through a friend from college that time, and now with another friend, everyone speaks highly of those days in supermarkets.”
Cover the need of 45,000 people
With the motto “Make it spring for everyone”, Operation Kilo Primavera will take place on May 27-28 and June 3-4, combining two ways of donating: traditional food collection and online financial contribution depending on the distribution chain. The foods that will be requested on this occasion are: milk, sunflower oil, rice, dried vegetables and chicken broth.
