Many people stood by the side of the road in Alblasserdam on Friday to say goodbye to the 34-year-old woman who was shot dead last week in a care farm in South Holland. People were visibly emotional along the route of the funeral procession with carriage.
The relatives of the woman had called on the woman to pay her last respects along the procession. The tour passed the town hall, where mayor Jaap Paans also expressed his condolences. Flags will hang at half mast on many houses and public buildings and churches in Alblasserdam on Friday.
According to Paans, the large turnout shows the involvement not only in Alblasserdam, but also in the surrounding municipalities. “It is very impressive that an entire village hangs the flags at half mast en masse and that the mills in the entire Alblasserwaard go into mourning, that is really exceptional,” said the mayor. In addition to the victim’s family, Paas also saw the farmer and owner of the care farm, the counselors and a number of clients “who are traumatized, but still had the need to be here together”.
The funeral of the second victim of the shooting, a 16-year-old girl, will later be held privately in another municipality.
A 38-year-old man from Oud-Alblas has been detained for the shooting incident. He is a former client of the care farm who was sent away after it became known that he had an unwanted relationship with a fellow client. In addition to the two fatalities, two other people were seriously injured. They are still in the hospital. The Public Prosecution Service does not want to say anything about how the two are doing.
Later Friday will also be the funeral of the two victims of the scooter accident that happened on the same day as the shooting. An honorary hedge is planned for one of the two at the Alblasserdam cemetery. The mayor will also be present.
A 24-year-old motorist has been arrested in connection with the scooter accident. He is suspected of manslaughter. There is still uncertainty about the circumstances that give rise to that suspicion.
The four victims were commemorated last Tuesday during a meeting organized by five local church communities in the Ichthuskerk. About 250 people were there.
