Many more reports about phishing on behalf of the tax authorities

The Tax Authorities receive many more reports of attempted phishing whereby the scammer pretends to be the Tax Authorities. The number of reports is two to three times higher than normal.

In phishing, scammers try to steal money from people, for example by telling them to pay a tax debt. That money then goes to money donkeys. DigiD logins are also handled. “But the Tax and Customs Administration never communicates by email or text message,” emphasizes Henk Hendriks of the Tax and Customs Administration.

“Normally we get about 2000 reports per week. During the corona crisis, we saw a peak of between 10,000 and 12,000 reports per week,” he says. That has since weakened to 4,000 to 6,000 reports per week. “The Tax and Customs Administration tries to block as many fraudulent domain names as possible, but it is mopping with the tap open,” says Hendriks.
