The mayor of San Jose, Sam Liccardo, previously stated that several people received medical attention after the incident, which happened on a railway area in the city before 7 o’clock on Wednesday morning.
The crime scene is located near the sheriff’s office in Santa Clara County, not far from the local airport, about an hour’s drive south of San Francisco.
A spokesman for the Santa Clara sheriff, Russell Davis, confirmed to local newspapers San Jose Mercury News that the perpetrator is dead, but can not say anything further about how many have been killed and injured. Nor would he say how the perpetrator died.
Davis says, however, that some of the victims are employees of the public transport company VTA, which is responsible for light rail, bus and other transport in the San Jose area in the high-tech center Silicon Valley.
The mother of an employee tells the radio channel KTVU that the shooting took place during a meeting in the trade union, while another person says that his mother hid from the shooter together with colleagues in another room.
The shooting happened at the busiest time of the day at the maintenance workshop for VTA, while the employees prepared for the day’s traffic, according to Raj Singh in the union.
