The country became a world leader in vaccination in the initial campaign
Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett said there was an influx of people who wanted to get a third dose of vaccine to protect against the spread of the Delta variant of the coronavirus, the Associated Press reported.
Bennett cited official statistics released today, according to which more than 420,000 Israelis over the age of 60 have received a “boost” dose – more than a third of the total population targeted by the vaccination program. According to him, by the end of the day this figure is expected to rise to half a million people. The prime minister spoke after the regular weekly government meeting.
Israel reports an increase in the number of people hospitalized with COVID-19, almost half of whom have the more contagious Delta variant. Authorities have returned to the mandatory wearing of masks indoors and are considering more restrictions.
The country became a world leader in coronavirus vaccination in the initial campaign. Nearly 5.4 million of the 9.3 million population received two doses of the vaccine.
In recent days, the World Health Organization has called for a moratorium on “boosting” doses so that more people in poorer countries can receive the first dose.
