Many in Sunset Park heed the suggestion to wear a mask

This is the image that has become common in Sunset Park: most residents seem to be abiding by the mayor’s new recommendation on the use of masks inside businesses to prevent the spread of the new variant of the coronavirus.

“I always use it because it is the protection that one has, so that the Covid does not give you, so that it does not give me the pandemic, that is the protection then,” said Mercedes, a neighbor.

But we also note that most establishments in this neighborhood have posted signs prohibiting unprotected entry.

“I understand that if you go to the store, you have to wear a mask, otherwise one does not enter,” added another neighbor.

And it is that in a neighborhood like this, which was hit at the peak of the pandemic, there are people who never stopped wearing a mask even after being vaccinated, and even after coronavirus infections began to decline.

“All the time I use it … because it scares me, I know that I am vaccinated but I am afraid that some, because they are leaving that there are vaccinated that are infected,” said another neighbor.

The city has seen a rapid increase in infections, with 1,200 per day, six times more than in June. Even so, the municipal government has not declared a mandate but a suggestion to use a mask indoors. But Mercedes avoids going to any business that doesn’t demand it.

“Here in the Quinta there is a store that sells vegetables, there I saw people grouped together without masks, and that is not good,” said Mercedes.

We also saw that even on the streets, there is still a high percentage of people with masks.
