Many in Norway have been looking forward to this BMW news

For BMW enthusiasts around the world, the letter “M” often makes the heart beat a little faster. For decades, the M3 model has been synonymous with driving pleasure and hefty performance. But it has not been a particularly practical car.

That is about to change. BMW M GmbH confirms that, for the first time, a BMW M3 Touring will be produced. In good Norwegian it means: Station wagon.

The world premiere of the all-new BMW M3 Sedan and BMW M4 Coupe is just a few weeks away. It is also no secret that a brand new BMW M4 Cabriolet will arrive next year.

But – what has been a well-kept secret, until now, is that there will also be a BMW M3 Touring.

One thing is very surprising about this BMW beast

Two years ahead

BMW has only made Touring variants of the big brother BMW M5 before. The first time was the second generation M5 in 1992, then for the fourth generation that came in 2007.

In 2000, one prototype of the BMW M3 Touring was made, with the aim of showing that even such a model could one day become a reality. This time, the process does not stop there.

The development of the M3 Touring is still in the start-up phase, where the entire process up to series production will take around two years.

Station wagon on the racetrack

In a short time, the first prototypes of the brand new M3 Touring will be visible around BMW M GmbH’s premises in Garching, just outside Munich – and on the Nürburgring racing track.

Testing on public roads and racing tracks is a milestone that confirms that the M3 Touring is no longer just a dream that remains on the drawing board. This is where the extremely sporty features of an M model and the practical shapes of a station wagon meet. A combination many BMW enthusiasts have long wanted.

– First and foremost an M3

Specifications, performance and design have yet to be speculated on, but under the hood we will find a rev-ready petrol engine with six cylinders in a row, in the best BMW spirit. Large air intakes in the front and the characteristic four exhaust pipes in the rear are also iconic details for an M model.

– Not all car manufacturers will be able to develop and launch a car like the BMW M3 Touring in the time to come, side by side with a number of new plug-in hybrids and all-electric models. It testifies that BMW still puts pure driving pleasure first, even for those of us with 98-octane in our blood. And – even if the car becomes a station wagon, it will first and foremost be a BMW M3, says Marius Tegneby, communications director at BMW Group Norway.
