BEIJING – Scientists will use cosmic rays to uncover what is inside the closed tomb of
China’s first emperor guarded by
Terracotta Warrior . Apart from the terracotta warriors, archaeologists believe that the more than 2,000-year-old tomb was filled with deadly tools.
Quoted from Express, Tuesday (12/21/2021), the mystical tomb has long been rumored to have a death trap and an ancient map with a river of liquid mercury. The tomb is buried deep beneath a 249-foot-tall pyramid building and the tomb is located inside a cemetery in Xi’an’s Lintong District.
Thousands of statues of Terracotta soldiers to the east of the tomb, according to historians, are symbols to protect Emperor Qin Shi Huang in the realm of death. Formerly the statue of the soldier was painted red but faded over time.

Currently, scientist submitted a proposal to scan the 2,229-year-old tomb to map the layout of the structure in three dimensions using atomic particle detectors. This method was used by scientists in 2017 to reveal hidden spaces inside the Great Pyramid at Giza.
Beijing Normal University physicist Yuanyuan Liu and his team proposed the technique to investigate dark matter at China’s Xi Jinping Underground Laboratory. It is the deepest cosmic ray facility in the world and is buried 3.7 miles beneath the province of Sichuan.
The team told the Times, as an ancient civilization with a long history, China has a large number of cultural relics that require archaeological research.
“The application of muon absorption imaging to the archaeological field can be an important supplement to traditional geophysical methods,” he said.
