Garching (dpa) – According to a new survey, the vast majority of people in Germany would like to talk to their partner about the unromantic topic of money.

But when it comes to specific issues such as retirement provision or debt, many people are much more cautious. This is the result of the representative Yougov survey of 2047 people. The client was the financial service provider Swiss Life Select.

88 percent found that finances shouldn’t be a taboo subject in a relationship. But only half of those surveyed said that loans or debts should be discussed openly. According to this, 44 percent would like clarity about the monthly available net income of their partner. At least 61 percent think it is important to talk about the monthly costs.

However, the issue of income in old age is apparently avoided by a considerable majority. According to Swiss Life, “feelings obviously play a more important role than financial planning”. Because according to the survey, less than a third (31 percent) wanted to know what steps their partner had taken towards retirement provision.

One barrier to open discussion about money is the fear of arguments: Sixteen percent said the topic could spark arguments.
