Many countries in Europe work well with Russia. Why can’t we? – 2024-08-23 17:26:09

/ world today news/ Yesterday, the TASS agency published a statement by Vladimir Putin, which clearly states the desire of the Russian Federation to work for the development of Bulgarian-Russian relations, despite the recent misunderstandings.

This statement comes in the context of other international actions of Russia, such as its key participation in solving the Iranian nuclear problem or the adoption late last night of a resolution of the UN Security Council on the conflict in Syria. It is becoming more and more clear that the picture that is painted for us of an aggressive and implacable Russia does not correspond to the true intentions of this country.

In Yalta, President Putin unequivocally stated that Bulgaria’s membership in NATO is not a problem and does not bother Russia. Why, then, should we, the Bulgarians, feel worried about our membership in NATO in order to be friends with Russia? A permanent position of the BSP, expressed in the special declarations of our party on the revision of sanctions against Russia, is that Bulgaria’s membership in NATO and the European Union should not be seen as an obstacle to the development of the friendly and benevolent relations traditional to our two the people. On the contrary, Bulgaria is called, because of its geopolitical location, but also because of its deep spiritual and cultural connection with Russia, to play the role of a conciliator and contribute to smoothing out disputes. Instead, some Bulgarian politicians are quick to rank among Russia’s fiercest critics. It is not clear what they are aiming for with this overexcited behavior, but it is certainly not in Bulgaria’s interest. Proofs are the weak results of the tourist season, the losses our farmers suffer, and the general disapproval of the Bulgarian people due to the deteriorating relations with Russia.

There is already a clear sign that the Russian side is ready to work with Bulgaria, both for the general development of relations between the two peoples, and on specific projects. South Stream was also mentioned. The Bulgarian authorities have no right to miss this opportunity and correct some of the mistakes they made. It is time for a nationally useful, balanced policy towards Russia, which in no way can be interpreted as a disloyal act towards NATO or the EU. Many countries in Europe achieve this. Why can’t we?
