Many countries condemn the attack on Brazil’s presidential palace

Jakarta, CNNI Indonesia

Many countries have condemned the uprising of supporters of the former president Brazil Jair Bolsonaro who occupied the congress building, the Supreme Court at the Presidential Palace in Brasilia on Sunday (8/1).

Protesters, by the thousands, stormed the building and destroyed the property inside. Many people have been seen on the roof of the congress building to surround the building.

The United States (USA) says it condemns any attempt to undermine democracy in Brazil.

“President Biden is following this situation closely and our support for Brazil’s democratic institutions is unwavering. Brazilian democracy will not be shaken by violence,” US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said on Twitter. Reuters.

French President Emmanuel Macron also condemned this action.

“The will of the Brazilian people and democratic institutions must be respected,” Macron said on Twitter.

Macron gave support to Brazil’s newly inaugurated president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva last week.

The attack on three institutions, Macron said, “is an unacceptable question of the results of the democratic elections, won unambiguously last October 30 by Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva”.

Lula narrowly won 50.9% from Bolsonaro’s 49.1% in the Brazilian presidential election held on October 30, 2022. Bolsonaro has expressed his refusal and questioned the country’s electronic voting system.

Lula was sworn in as president of Brazil last week.

Lula himself also condemned the riots and issued a decree giving his government special powers to restore law and order in Brasilia.

Argentine President Alberto Fernandez has called on the region to unite against attacks by “anti-democratic” mobs in Brazil.

“I want to express my rejection of what happened in Brasilia. My unconditional support and that of the Argentine people to @LulaOficial in the face of the coup attempt he is facing,” Fernandez said on Twitter.

European Union leaders have joined in condemning the attacks on three Brazilian government institutions.

“My absolute condemnation of the attack on Brazil’s democratic institutions,” European Council President Charles Michel wrote on Twitter.

European Parliament President Roberta Metsola also tweeted: “Deeply concerned about what is happening in #Brazil. Democracy must always be respected.”
