Many children suffer, recognize what type 1 diabetes is

It turns out type 1 diabetes not only affects adults. It turns out that children can also suffer from this autoimmune disease. Type 1 diabetes occurs when the immune system does not recognize the insulin-making cells in the pancreas and attacks these cells. As a result, the body is unable to produce enough insulin.

Type 1 diabetes is also known as juvenile diabetes because it often affects children. However, this disease is also suffered by many infants and adults.

According to the CDC, it can take months to years for the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas to destroy before symptoms of type 1 diabetes can finally appear. However, the characteristics of type 1 diabetes are quite obvious and tend to develop in a short time.

According to data from the Indonesian Pediatrician Association (IDAI), the incidence of diabetes in children aged 0-18 years in Indonesia has increased to more than 1000 cases in the last 10 years.

However, IDAI noted that there were 1,249 Indonesian children diagnosed with Type-1 Diabetes Mellitus (DMT1) during the 2017-2019 period.
