Many Bodies on the banks of the Ganges, Believed Unrelated to Corona

New Delhi

Police India is investigating the findings of many bodies those buried shallowly in the sand area on the banks of the Ganges or those found washed away in the sacred river. Speculation has surfaced on local social media calling the bodies victims corona virus (COVID-19).

As reported Associated Press, Monday (17/5/2021), riding a jeep and boat, Indian police used portable loudspeakers with microphones to ask residents, especially in rural northern India, not to throw bodies into rivers.

“We are here to help you carry out the final rites,” the local police appealed.

Last Friday (14/5), pouring rain revealed the cloth covering the bodies which were buried in a shallow sand area on the riverbank. The bodies were scattered in a large area of sand on the banks of the Ganges River in the Prayagraj region of Uttar Pradesh.

In confirmation on Sunday (16/5) local time, Uttar Pradesh government spokesman Navneet Sehgal denied reports by local media that more than 1,000 bodies of Corona victims were found stranded in rivers in the last two weeks.

“I believe these bodies have nothing to do with COVID-19,” Sehgal said in a statement.

He noted that a number of local villagers did not cremate the bodies, according to custom, due to Hindu tradition during several religiously important periods and to dump the bodies into the river or dig shallow graves on the riverbank.
