Manufacturing services, main source of income from foreign trade

Mexico City. Nearly 5,222 companies in Mexico carried out international trade, in at least one service, which represented 53.3 percent of the total number of companies nationwide (9,796 companies) and had revenues of 1.13 trillion pesos during 2022, revealed the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi).

74.1 percent of total income came from the United States, its main country of origin. The member countries of the European Union (EU) followed, with 9 percent; Switzerland, with 7.5 and the rest of the countries, with 9.4 percent.

The Inegi, which presented the International Trade in Services Survey (Ecis) 2023, with reference data from 2022, specified that manufacturing services in physical inputs that are owned by others generated 82 percent of the total, which makes this service component in the main source of income from international trade in services (CIS).

Transportation services contributed 8.2 percent and other business services. While research and development services; professional and consulting services in business administration and technical services related to trade and other business services account for 4.6 percent.

Meanwhile, charges for the use of intellectual property contributed 0.3 percent, but the expenses incurred for CIS imports accounted for 27.8 percent of this item.

The amount of expenses for CIS was 235,664.5 million pesos in 2022. Of the total expenses incurred for CIS imports, 29.2 percent corresponded to transportation services. Charges for the use of intellectual property followed, at 27.8 percent, and other business services, at 21.6 percent. Personal, cultural and recreational services represented the lowest percentage, with 0.3 percent of total expenses.

Of the total expenses reported by companies, 53.5 percent went to the United States; 25.6 percent, to EU member countries; 6.5 percent to Japan and 14.3 percent to the rest of the countries.
