Manuela Pihlap Investigates Tallinn’s Missing Christmas Lights

Tallinn‘s dim christmas: Council Member Questions Festive Lighting Shortage

A noticeable lack of holiday cheer has sparked an inquiry in Tallinn, Estonia. City council member Manuela Pihlap has formally requested an investigation into the substantially reduced number of christmas lights illuminating the city this year compared to previous years.

Pihlap’s concern centers on the impact of the diminished festive lighting. “Christmas decorations have created a festive atmosphere and provided eye candy for the city’s residents and guests, also creating light, security and brightness in the city’s place in this dark time,” she stated.

The discrepancy is particularly stark in certain areas. Pihlap points out that while the Old town and city center, along with North Tallinn, retain some festive decorations, many other neighborhoods are noticeably darker. “From the center of Narva maantee to Lasnamäe and Liivalaia street, ther are almost no Christmas lights and it is dark,” she observed. “The habitat of the kindergartens was also decorated before, but now they are left as if in the dark.” Even a traditionally prominent display, the large oak tree at the Russalka intersection, remains unadorned this year.

Pihlap’s inquiry seeks to determine the whereabouts of the city’s Christmas decorations and the reasons for their limited deployment. “The question arises as to whether something was left behind and why Christmas decorations are suddenly so scarce and disproportionate, leaving some areas completely without. We hope to find out,” she continued. She further emphasized the stark contrast by referencing past displays: “If you look at the photo gallery from December 1 last year, it’s clear that there is a noticeable lack of jewelry this year.”

The investigation promises to shed light on the situation, addressing not only the aesthetic concerns but also potential implications for public safety during the darker winter months.the outcome will likely be of interest to residents and visitors alike, highlighting the importance of festive lighting in maintaining a vibrant and secure city environment.
