Manchester United had no problems, with Manuel Ugarte making his debut as a starter against lowly Barnsley, from League One (English third division). Antony’s goal and doubles from Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho and Christian Eriksen qualified Erik Ten Hag’s team for the round of 16 of the League Cup (7-0).
United held back little despite the strength of their opponents and easily defeated Barnsley, a team whose most recognisable name is Gabriel Slonina, the goalkeeper, on loan from Chelsea and who took a truckload of goals.
The Red Devils opened the scoring in the 16th minute with a superb goal from Rashford, who got past a defender and finished in the corner to score for the second consecutive match. After a streak of twelve matches without scoring, the English striker seems to have uncorked the champagne.
Ten Hag’s men were very comfortable and Antony forced a penalty after the half-hour and converted it himself. The Brazilian’s first goal since April.
Garnacho scored the next two goals, first taking advantage of a loose ball inside the box and later on a counterattack, and has confirmed himself as the big news for United at the start of the season. Despite only having started twice, the Argentine has four goals and three assists so far this season.
The rout was rounded off by Rashford, in another offensive transition, and Christian Eriksen, with a double, and United await their opponent in the round of 16, where they will also face Crystal Palace, who beat Queen’s Park Rangers 1-2, Brentford, who beat Leyton Orient 3-1, and Sheffield Wednesday, who beat Blackpool 0-1.
Stoke City also qualified for the last 16 by beating Fleetwood on penalties (2-1), Southampton, who eliminated Everton on penalties (1-2), and Preston North End, who also beat Fulham on penalties (2-1).
