Manuel Neuer has officially said goodbye to the German national football team after 15 years of wearing the legendary white jersey, where the goalkeeper’s greatest achievement was the World Cup he won in 2014, where he was a key player.
It is worth mentioning that Manuel Neuer is the third player to announce his retirement from the German national team following the European Championship in the middle of the year, after Toni Kroos and Ilkay Gundogan had previously announced their retirement from the ‘Mannschaft’.
“After more than 15 years and 124 national matches, my career with the German national football team ends today. Anyone who knows me knows that I did not take this decision lightly. I feel very good physically and of course the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico would have also been a disappointment. And yet, after many long and intense discussions with my family and friends, I have decided that right now is the right time to close my chapter in the National Eleven,” the Bayern Munich goalkeeper said on his Instagram account.
Neuer thus ended up playing for the German national team for 15 years, where he played a total of 124 games, including friendly matches and official matches, and kept a clean sheet on 51 occasions.
Neuer’s possible successor in the German goal will now be FC Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre Ter Stegen, who was the second choice in the European team and was playing just when his compatriot was not fit to play.
