Four-wheel enthusiasts have decided to keep a car with a manual transmission in their garage. Here are the best on the market.
Ask any driver in the world and no one will tell you they prefer an automatic transmission to a manual one. Sports cars must be able to boast a handle on the steering wheelbut by removing the pleasure of deciding the exact moment of shifting everything will have a different flavor.
Manual gearbox is the very essence of driving and between lightning-fast clutch changes and heel-toe driving that was so dear to the good Ayrton Senna, they convey emotions. Automatic cars may also have that extra blink of robotic speed, but isn’t the extreme driving pleasure of finding the right feeling with your vehicle preferable? Once you get to know your car fully, you will have a lot of fun, especially on mountain passes.
A different matter, however, concerns city cars and SUVs. Cars that are designed to guarantee only maximum comfort and with attention to versatility in the city. Anyone who buys a sports car does so in the full belief of being able to put powerful engines to the test, outside of urban contexts or on the track. Take, for example, the last Porsche to come with a manual gearbox which literally drove purists crazy.
The 911 S/T which pays homage to 60 years of the 911 is equipped with the same 525 HP 4.0 naturally aspirated engine as the 911 GT3 RS. The GT3 version with 510 HP Touring package has a 6-speed manual gearbox. Accelerate in just 3.7 seconds for sensations that will make you feel like a true old school driver. Unfortunately, the series is limited to 1,963 examplesbut the Stuttgart company has understood that focusing on a good old manual gearbox, revisited with current technologies, is a winning move.
The other jewels with manual transmission
BMW’s sports models are characterized by the letter M which stands for Motorsport. The BMW M3 is offered with a 6-speed manual transmission. Thanks to a power of 480 HP it sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.2 seconds and reaches a top speed of 250 km/h or 290 km/h with the optional M Driver’s Package. The M4 coupé, however, equally boasts 480 HP developed from the 3.0 biturbo petrol engine. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.2 seconds is a real pleasure with a 6-speed manual gearbox.
Let’s move to the United States to celebrate the Mustang. The 460 HP Mach 1 and the 450 HP Mustang GT, strictly rear-wheel drive, are equipped with a 6-speed manual transmission as an alternative to the much loved 10-speed automatic transmission in the United States. With the manual you can reach 100 km/h from standstill in 4.8 seconds in the Mach 1 version (4.4 seconds with automatic transmission) and in 4.6 seconds for the GT (4.3 seconds for the automatic).
The GT version reaches 250 km/h and the Mach 1 at 267 km/h. Moving on to a great English classic, however, the Lotus Emira with the 3.5 V6 Supercharged engine boasts 405 CV and a dream 6-speed manual. The coupé feels light and agile, transmitting spectacular sensations. The manual gear knob has its timeless charm, with all due respect to the progressives who have become Americanized out of a mere question of laziness.
