ManU captain Harry Maguire arrested by Greek police after fight

“Three British men, one of whom is a footballer for a British team, attacked police on the night of Thursday to Friday, slightly injuring four of them and were arrested,” he told the AFP Petros Vassilakis, a police official from Syros, a nearby island.

They will be presented to the Syros prosecutor on Friday afternoon, he added.

According to the Greek news agency ANA, Harry Maguire, his brother and a friend had a fight with other English tourists in a bar on the tourist island of Mykonos.

When the police, alerted by residents, arrived on the scene, they were insulted and one of the suspects attacked an officer.

The police asked the three men to follow them to the station, but they tried to escape, according to Petros Vassilakis.

According to the official police statement, a second fight broke out at the local police station where the three men “resisted fiercely (to the arrest), pushing and hitting three officers”, according to the same text.

One of the suspects then tried to bribe the officers to cover up the incident, Greek police said.

Manchester United have confirmed that they are aware of “an alleged incident in which Harry Maguire was involved last night (Thursday) in Mykonos”.

The 27-year-old England defender, transferred from Leicester a year ago for 87 million euros, “is fully cooperating with the Greek authorities,” the club said in a statement reported by the Press Association agency.

“At this stage we are not going to make any further comments,” Manchester United said.

This case came before the entry into force of a curfew in nightclubs and restaurants in Mykonos on Friday evening, due to the novel coronavirus pandemic.

Nightclubs, bars and restaurants are now supposed to close at midnight, masks are mandatory and only groups of up to nine people are allowed to travel.

But managers deplore that customers who leave their establishments then simply gather in the street.
