Jakarta, CNN Indonesia —
Boxer Manny Pacquiao nominated as presidential candidate Filipina by a stronghold in the PDP-Laban party. The news was conveyed by a member of the camp, Senator Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III.
As reported by Reuters, Pacquiao, who is currently serving as a senator, was nominated by the camp during the national deliberations of the ruling party in the Philippines on Sunday (19/9).
The nominations come days after another camp in the PDP-Laban nominated President Rodrigo Duterte as its vice-presidential candidate. Then they nominated Senator Christopher “Bong” Go as a presidential candidate.
Citing Rappler on Sunday (19/9), Pacquiao accepted the PDP-Laban party’s nomination to run for president in 2022. He will compete for the position currently held by Duterte.
“We are ready for the leadership challenge,” Pacquiao said in his speech.
In addition, members of the camp who supported Pacquiao freed him to choose his running mate and list his Senate. However, until now there has been no further information regarding the names of the pair and senators.
Previously, Pacquiao had expressed his desire to become president of the Philippines. He said this after losing to Yordenis Ugas in the duel for the WBA Super welterweight championship belt at the T Mobile Arena, Las Vegas, United States, last August.
“To be sure, I will make an announcement about my candidacy as president of the Philippines in a month. I know that will happen and will be much more difficult than boxing, but I want to help a lot of people in the Philippines,” Pacquiao said at the time.
