When bound by marriage, a husband and wife are required to fulfill their rights and obligations. The wife has obligations in the household including those related to adab towards her husband.
Regarding the manners of wives towards husbands, Imam Al-Ghazali in his book entitled Al-Adab fid Din in Majmu’ah Rasail al-Imam al-Ghazali (Cairo, Al-Maktabah At-Taufiqiyyah, page 442) explained the manners of wives towards husbands as follows:
Etiquette of a woman with her husband: constant shyness towards him, less confrontation with him, obedience to his commands, calmness when he speaks, guarding his back in his absence, abstaining from treason with his money, good scent, taking care of the mouth and cleanliness of clothes, showing contentment, using compassion, always adorning, honoring his family and relatives, seeing his condition with kindness, accepting his action with gratitude, showing love for him when close to him, and showing pleasure when seeing him..
Meaning: “The wife’s etiquette towards her husband, namely: always feeling ashamed, not arguing much, always obeying his orders, silent when the husband is talking, guarding the husband’s property, keeping the body smelling good, mouth smelling good and dressing clean, showing qana’ah, showing compassion, always decorating, glorifying the husband’s relatives and family, seeing the husband’s reality with priority, accepting the husband’s work with gratitude, showing love for the husband when he is near him, showing joy when he sees the husband.”
Shaykh Khalid Abdurrahman Al-‘Ak in his book Household Adab According to the Qur’an and As-Sunnah explains there are three important adab points that a wife must have. What are they? Here are the details.
1. Wife’s morals in behavior
The wife takes care of herself and her husband’s property. The wife is obedient and obedient to her husband. Manages the household well. The wife gets along well with her husband’s family. Always thrifty and likes to save money. Do not leave the house without the husband’s permission. Try not to burden your husband with a lot of demands. Always be polite and patient. Accept your husband’s mistakes by being gentle. Keep away from things that make it difficult for your husband. .Accept whatever the conditions and sustenance that the husband gives. Take care of her husband both when leaving the house and inside the house. It is not permissible to fast sunnah without the husband’s permission.
2. Wife’s Morals in Speaking Words
When speaking, you should always speak gently, so that you can attract the heart of your husband. Smooth and gentle words can encourage husbands to maintain the integrity and harmony of the household.
Because, soft and sweet words will make the household relationship closer. This does not only apply to wives, but husbands must also speak gentle words.
3. Wife’s morals in associating with her husband
Dress up and wear perfume before going to bed, brush your teeth, don’t let your mouth smell bad. Dress up when your husband is at home, not just when you go out. You can’t refuse your husband’s invitation. Then let them both be in the blanket.
