The day begins with annoyances for Inspector Wallander and his colleagues: Because the tank of his car has been broken into and pumped dry, Inspector Wallander is late for work, as is his friend and colleague Martinsson, whose car has had all four tires slashed.
At the same time, Wallander’s daughter Linda and her colleague Stefan are called to the site where a body is believed to have been found – the severed female skull turns out to be the head of a mannequin. But when Linda and Stefan investigate a disturbance shortly afterwards, they are dismayed to discover a woman who has been murdered in a bizarre manner instead of an arguing couple.
The next morning, Martinsson’s daughter has disappeared without a trace, but her blood-stained bedroom leaves little doubt about her fate. When Linda almost falls victim to an assassination attempt a short time later, Wallander suspects that all these seemingly mysterious incidents are parts of a murderous puzzle.
While the desperate Martinsson ignores all official regulations to find out who could have kidnapped his daughter and abused her, Wallander begins just as feverishly to discover the identity of the “invisible enemy” who wants to crown his diabolical game by turning Wallander and Martinsson into helpless witnesses to the death of their own daughters with a cleverly devised move.
