Manizha Talash, a pro-Afghan women writing costs her IOC disqualification in breakdancing

“Free the women of Afghanistan”. This slogan displayed during the ‘breaking’ competition cost Manizha Talash, a 21-year-old B-girl from Kabul who moved to Spain and is now part of the refugee team, disqualified. Talash was defeated in the pre-qualification challenge by Dutch India and then showed off a blue stole with the large slogan on her shoulders.

“I wanted to show the world that anything is possible”

The disqualification was triggered by the violation of article 50 of the Olympic rules that prohibits the use of slogans or making political statements on the competition fields of the Games. “I wanted to show the world that anything is possible,” explained the Afghan B-girl after the race.

On the run after the return of the Taliban

Manizha left Afghanistan in 2021 after the Taliban returned to power and banned music and dancing, as well as banning girls from schools and gyms. She first moved to Pakistan and in 2022 she arrived in Spain. Talash is not her real surname, but she uses it to protect herself from threats from the fundamentalist regime.

In Paris, the refugee team, composed of 37 athletes from 11 countries, is present in 12 Olympic disciplines.
