The Ministry of Agriculture of the Mayor’s Office of Manizales provides technical and social support to 18 urban gardens this year, as part of the ‘Urban Agriculture’ program, which seeks to promote food production in the city. Of the 18 orchards, four are new and are located in the La Blanca prison, the Villa Josefina women’s prison, the La Enea neighborhood (San Pío X sector) and the San Sebastián neighborhood.
The Secretary of Agriculture, Cristina Otálvaro Idárraga, indicated that in addition to teaching the participants to calculate production costs, advice is also provided on the management and care of the orchards, social workshops are held and recommendations are given on the integrated management of pests and diseases, as well as the proper use of soil and post-harvest fertilization.
To have a vegetable garden, it is advisable to have a place with sunlight, rainwater storage and a space to establish seedbeds and develop organic fertilizer. The Ministry of Agriculture will continue to promote food production within the city, generating opportunities for the community and supporting sustainable development.
