As a result of the harvesting campaigns of mango carried out at the national level in the 2019-2020 period, Peru achieved exports of that fruit for about 235,000 tons, an annual growth of 38.23%, estimated the Peruvian Association of Mango Producers and Exporters (APEM).
However, for the 2020-2021 campaign it is projected to reach an estimated 207,000 tons of mango to export on average (that is, a 12% drop compared to the previous season), according to calculations by that association, according to its President César Morocho, to Management.
He explained that the lower expected harvest of this fruit is mainly due to climatic factors: in the first place, delays of up to two weeks in flowering due to the minimum temperatures registered in mid-2020.
Added to this, he explained, the drought problems that occurred in October, and particularly in the northern part of the country, which is where crops are concentrated: 65% in Piura, 12% in Lambayeque -in the valley of Olmos- and the rest in the Casma valley (Áncash).
It was in these areas where water storage in the last months of 2020 fell to its lowest levels in recent years, and even today they are below 50% of their capacity, according to Senamhi.
Now, with the increase in heat this summer, the flowering, Moreno noted, has arrived suddenly, in such a way that it will not allow the export of all the mango that will be produced, due to lack of installed capacity (for processing and shipping ) of the producers, and in the ports.
New market
For its part, Promperú reported that, in order to position Peru as the origin of quality mangoes, an event was held in renowned stores in South Korea, organized by Hyundai.
However, APEM considered that reaching Asian markets with greater force requires greater investments, which today no longer have an incentive due to the elimination of the Agrarian Promotion Law, and the cost of the regulation that replaced it has increased.
