“They are terrible”said the producer and songwriter Steven Wilson proposed by Måneskin. Once again the rock band led by Damiano David finds itself faced with a shower of criticism. And certainly the tone of the leader of the gods does not go unnoticed Porcupine Tree, a band that not everyone knows but that has been producing alternative rock music since the nineties. Sharp, direct and merciless words for the young Roman band. But is all this anger necessary?
Måneskin, The Word of Steven Wilson
It seems to see the usual movie: a new band is born, it reaches success, it takes the credit. And then there are the detractors, the nostalgic of the past who waste no time to criticize “there are no more half seasons”, “It was better in my day” and things like that. Steven Wilson’s words have a bit of this aftertaste, although it cannot be denied that the singer-songwriter and his band, the Porcupine Treehave an incredible, long-lasting and respectable career behind them.
Engaged in Italy for one of the stages of the tour, Wilson gave an interview to Corriere della Sera in which, in no uncertain terms, he spoke of today’s music, of how it has changed and at the same time has undergone a sort of “involution”. “There are some new bands, but rock has failed to reinvent itself for too long – said the songwriter -. (…) I’m not saying it’s a bad thing, even if I were a kid I’d be more interested in Billie Eilish or Taylor Swift than in the new Iron Maiden or Foo Fighters record. But have I discovered so many new rock bands that are valid in the last 20 years? The answer is no“.
Categorical, without a doubt. But then he upped the ante by talking about gods Moonlight: “They are terrible. Of course it’s fantastic for Italy and it’s always good when a band introduces kids to guitars and drums, I just wish they were a little better ”. And that’s not all, because the leader of Porcupine Tree added: “Taking them seriously is tough because I’m a poor copy of what the others were, (…) wouldn’t it be nice if someone a little more creative and inspired came along? ».
Måneskin, the worldwide success and the inevitable criticism
The world of music is so complex and varied that such criticisms leave some time they find. Whatever your musical genre, whatever your skill in playing an instrument or your talent as a performer, there will always be those who will be ready to point you out as someone else’s draft. Which, among other things, is not so dramatic: “copying”, as some define it, is basically nothing more than expressing one’s preferences and musical tastes in some way. And let’s not talk about plagiarism, of coursewhich is a whole other story.
Since they became the new idols of rock (that’s it, useless to go around it) Måneskin have attracted the appreciation of many, but it was inevitable that they also attracted the criticism of those who point to them as fake rockers. From a Iggy Pop who praised itrecording with them, among other things, a very successful song, a Mick Jagger dei Rolling Stones who wanted them at the opening of a concert, we pass for example to a Chris DeVille, journalist and music critic of Stereogumwho commented on the cover by Beggin’ even “ugly as to be offensive”.
There was no lack of criticism from Italy either. Roby Facchinetti defined them as good but “not able to last 50 years” like the Poohs. THE Countryside cousins have loudly claimed that Måneskin blatantly copy looks from their performances. It is a coincidence that such claims come always from those born in a specific decade?
