RIYADH: Insurance has become mandatory for foreign domestic workers coming to Saudi Arabia from today. This applies to domestic workers who come through the Musanid platform. Musanid Platform is a platform for recruiting foreign domestic workers. It helps the employer and domestic workers to get compensation in various cases like absenteeism, unemployment and death. Both parties can get many benefits through insurance.
This insurance service for domestic workers is part of the ongoing efforts of the Ministry of Human Resource and Social Development to develop the recruitment sector and protect the rights of both the domestic worker and the employer. Insurance for the first two years will be part of the contract procedures between the recruitment office and the employer. After two years, the employer can decide whether to take insurance or not.

The Ministry has earlier launched the Domestic Worker Wage Protection Program and the Unified Agreement Program to Protect Wage Rights and Recruit Domestic Workers. A single contract that binds both parties is one that protects the contractual rights and specifies the obligations of both parties. A number of joint agreements have also been signed to set maximum limits for the recruitment of domestic workers from different countries. The Ministry started the Musanid platform from the beginning of 2023. Currently, the number of customers using this service has reached more than 1,75,000. According to statistics, the number of domestic workers in Saudi Arabia is around 36.4 lakh.
