Mandatory guest inspections have caused a significant drop in sales in restaurants

From November, restaurant operators have been required to check guests for confirmation of vaccination, a negative test or a covoid in the last six months. Data from Dotykačka, which supplies the cash register system to more than a quarter of domestic gastronomic companies, show that in the first week of November, attendance fell by more than eleven percent month-on-month and aggregate sales fell by almost a fifth. This is confirmed by the findings of another restaurant system supplier, Storyous.

The decline in results in gastronomy is not only affected by mandatory inspections, but by the concurrence of several factors. “It simply came to our notice then. At the end of October, some seasonal companies ceased operations, so aggregate sales logically fell slightly with the onset of November. Until that week, it was the autumn holidays, when sales rose. The subsequent decline was even more pronounced. Last but not least, the autumn weather and the deteriorating societal mood can affect the number of visitors, ”said Petr Menclík, CEO of Dotykačka.

The situation varied from region to region. While, for example, in the Central Bohemian, Pardubice and South Moravian regions, the decline in sales in October was relatively smooth and until the beginning of November corresponded to the traditional autumn development after the end of the summer season, in some areas the impact of autumn holidays was significant.

According to the head of Storyous, Igor Třeslín, they recorded the largest decrease in guests and sales in the Hradec Králové, Karlovy Vary and Ústí nad Labem regions, which to some extent copies the seasonal operation curve of selected companies. “Revenues decreased the least in the Zlín Region and in Prague, which are relatively weakest by seasonal effects. In addition, compared to smaller regional cities, there are enough places with testing capacity, and testing on a daily basis is not a significant obstacle, “said the head of Storyous Igor Třeslín.

As for individual gastrose segments, the number of open establishments decreased with the arrival of November. This was reflected in a decline in traffic and sales. The sharpest declines were in hotel restaurants and nightlife-oriented businesses such as bars and clubs. Their attendance and sales rose sharply during the holidays and then fell sharply.

“Interesting developments could be observed in pubs. From the point of view of visitors, the autumn holidays practically did not affect them, the same number of people went to beer as the week before. However, visitors spent seven percent more during the holiday week. The first week of November then brought a drop in all indicators. 3.6 percent of the facilities closed and attendance fell by almost 22 percent. Sales also jumped by more than 23 percent compared to the holiday week, “added Menclík.
