Mandatory environmental insurance could be introduced in Russia

Russia is considering the issue of compulsory environmental insurance for companies in the event of damage to the environment as a result of accidents. Such an order was given by Deputy Prime Minister Victoria Abramchenko.

According to’agence TASS, the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment, the Federal Service for the Supervision of Natural Resources Management, the Federal Service for Ecological, Technological and Atomic Supervision, the Ministry of Energy and the Ministry of Industry and Commerce have received instructions on whether to introduce such a measure.

As part of the order given, the departments are expected to review data on the condition and trends of accidents at facilities for coke production, iron ore mining and processing and other industrial facilities, as well as data on the amount of environmental damage caused by these accidents.
