From the end of this summer, it will be mandatory to charge effectively when you park an electric car in a parking space reserved for charging an electric vehicle. Drivers will be allowed to park at a charging station until their battery is charged, but no longer. Gilkinet hopes to ensure sufficient ‘rotation’ at the charging stations.

Gilkinet also clarifies the road code so that parking on a reserved loading area is also legally regarded as parking, and not as standing still. This should prevent owners of an electric vehicle from parking in a reserved charging place and thus avoid paying parking in the area.

Sanctions for drivers who fail to charge when occupying a parking space are imposed by local authorities. In Antwerp, for example, a rotation rate of 0.01 euros per minute already applies to those who occupy a public charging station while the battery has already been charged for a long time. In Bruges, you can park at a public charging point for a maximum of two to four hours.
