Manchester United almost recorded a decisive victory over Sheffield United on Wednesday night. Erik ten Hag’s team fell behind twice at home, but with the good play of Bruno Fernandes, three points were still achieved: 4-2. With the win, Manchester United go over Newcastle United and are now in sixth place in the Premier League.

Manchester United were close to an opening goal in the first minute. Diogo Dalot tried from a good distance and almost stunned Wesley Foderingham. The experienced English keeper was finally able to intervene.

The Red Devils the match against Sheffield started strongly and also became dangerous through Alejandro Garnacho and Bruno Fernandes, but no goal was scored. After just fifteen minutes, the visitors made themselves heard for the first time: Cameron Archer pushed wide from a counter.

About ten minutes later, Manchester United should have taken the lead. Garnacho received the ball in the box and had time and space to shoot, but his effort was too simple to go past Foderingham. Soon after, Sheffield broke the ban, thanks to André Onana.

The Cameroonian goalkeeper passed the ball in his own box with Raphaël Varane. Onana did not catch the ball correctly, causing the ball to shoot slightly off his leg. He then tried to play Diogo Dalot, but the pass was too short and could have been intercepted. Jayden Bogle took advantage and did not fail in the one-on-one that followed: 0-1.

Even before half time, Manchester United would put their affairs in order. An infamous corner ended with Garnacho, who took the ball back. Harry Maguire was ready to go in: 1-1.

Soon in the second act things went wrong for the Ten Hag team for the second time. A long throw from Auston Trusty ended up close to sixteen Onana, after which former Eredivisie player Gustavo Hamer played in Ben Osborn. The latter had a low cross to Ben Brereton Díaz, who finished decisively: 1-2. A little later, Manchester United should have crossed Dalot again, but the wingback needed too much time in the one-on-one, after which the ball was stolen from him.

Before the hour even struck the Mancunians still right From a corner kick, Dalot again considered scoring after his effort crossed the goal line, had referee Michael Salisbury not blown his whistle for a penalty. The referee had seen a loss on Maguire and failed to give an advantage. From eleven meters, Bruno Fernandes still shot the 2-2 against the ropes.

The game was largely dominated by Manchester United and that team created the chances they needed, but were often not quick enough to finish. Sheffield took the lead from time to time and went close to a third through Brereton Díaz, but his effort narrowly missed the right post after being touched by Maguire.

A little less than ten minutes before the end, Manchester United took the lead for the first time. Bruno Fernandes aimed at a good distance and made a good shot in the top right corner with his weaker left foot: 3-2. Under the guidance of the Portuguese player, Rasmus Højlund also scored for the 4-2. A big relief for Ten Hag, who could have come under a lot of pressure with a poor result against the Premier League’s red lantern bearer, if that wasn’t already the case.

In injury time, the former coach of Go Ahead Eagles, FC Utrecht and Ajax gave his debut to a young player. Ethan Wheatley’s youth product came on for goalscorer Højlund: the first minutes for the eighteen-year-old striker.
