Manchester United’s Controversial Football Night: An Exciting Turnaround in the King’s City

– What really happened this November evening in the king’s city?, asked TV 2 commentator Øyvind Alsaker after Roony Bardghji made it 4-3 in Copenhagen.

The Swedish 17-year-old put an end to a wild football match.

– It is incredibly difficult to describe the feeling. The biggest stage in the world, says Bardghij in an interview with TV 2 after the match.

When he sat on the bench in the 1st half, there was little indication that the outcome would be like this.

For the English giant, both led 1–0, 2–0 and 3–2, but had to go home to Manchester nicely with zero points and a suspended Marcus Rashford in the bag. The striker’s dismissal completely changed the nature of the match.

Settle with Fernandes

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes was several times beyond the referee to share his views during the match. First when Marcus Rashford got a red card, then when the Danes got a penalty kick in the 1st half.

It was then that Mohamed Elyounoussi felt compelled to react:

– I think everyone who has seen United and him, he is someone who is always at the referee and complains and whines, says Elyounoussi to TV 2 after the match – and elaborates:

– I try to get him away from the referee and tell him: “It was ready”. It was nothing more than that.

– Because he complains about the penalty situation?

– Mhm, Elyounoussi nods approvingly.

The Norwegian also revealed that he had taken a big risk by playing. Ten days before the game against Manchester United, he picked up a strain injury, which would normally take longer to heal.

However, Elyounoussi did not regret having signed up ready for the match.

Compensated lightning fast

Three minutes after the sending off – in the 45th minute – Elyounoussi sent Parken into the sky. The Norwegian reduced the score to 1–2 in the last regular minute of the half.

– Game on!, exclaimed TV 2 expert and former Copenhagen champion Brede Hangeland.

Despite the impressive turnaround, there was little doubt that the red card marked the match. After the match, the referee’s decision became the big topic.

– I think we played well until the red card. The red card changed everything. It was a completely different match, says manager Erik ten Hag, according to the BBC.

– Never in the world if there is a red card for Rashford! Hate these slow motion replays and stills that make everything look ten times worse, wrote Sky pundit and former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher on X/Twitter.

Rashford looked to shield the ball, but put his left foot on the ankle of Elias Jelert Kristensen. The red card was shown after an assessment of the TV images.

– It is not possible that it is red for Rashford, wrote Arsenal legend Ian Wright.

Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford had to leave the field when he was sent off for this tackle in the match against Copenhagen.

Those plans were immediately met with opposition in TV 2’s break studio:

– Former footballers this, you know. They don’t know the rules. You cannot break the ankles of the opponents, said TV 2 expert Morten Langli.

– Yes, clumsy. Yes, unfortunate. But also a good red card in my eyes, was Jesper Mathisen’s verdict.

Ten Hag calls the first 20 minutes of the match the best the team has performed under him.

– With ten men, we still controlled the game. It is very disappointing. We fought so hard and played so well. Still, we don’t get points.

Would you give a red card to Marcus Rashford?

Yes, definitely an expulsion. No, it was unfortunate. I am unsure.

And in the seventh of 13 additional minutes, the visitors were once again unlucky. The ball bounced up into Harry Maguire’s arm after a cross. Penalty kick to the Danes – after strong reactions from the United camp.

– “What should I do”, says Bruno Fernandes – and that is a good argument. But that arm under the current regulations is the hand, Hangeland stated.

Bayern Munich won the second match in the group 2–1 over Galatasaray. The Germans thus claimed the group victory, while FCK moved up to 2nd place in the group.

Manchester United have the knife on their throat before the last two games.

And the pressure on manager ten Hag did not diminish after this autumn evening in Copenhagen.
