Antony has been removed from Brazil’s squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers. The Manchester United attacker is under investigation after his ex-girlfriend Gabriela Cavallin reported domestic violence.

Alleged messages between the two appeared in Brazilian media on Monday, in which Antony would have threatened and intimidated the woman several times. The Brazilian Football Federation then decided that the matter must be further investigated before he can play for the national team again.

The football association reports that Antony is not in the selection because of “the facts that became known on Monday”. The ex-girlfriend of the 23-year-old footballer filed a complaint against him in May.

‘tumultuous’

Antony denied having used violence at the time and repeated that again on Monday: “My relationship with Gabriela was tumultuous, but I was never guilty of physical aggression.”

The police in Sao Paulo confirm that an investigation is underway into the 16-time international, who made the switch from Ajax to Manchester United last year.

National coach Fernando Diniz has called up Gabriel Jesus from Arsenal to replace Antony for the games against Bolivia and Peru.
