The German Ralf Rangnick is of great interest to Manchester United who want to hire him as interim coach after sacking Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, the British press reported on Thursday.
63-year-old Ralf Rangnick is currently sports director of Lokomotiv Moscow. The Red Devils were led this week by Michael Carrick and went on to win at Villarreal in the Champions League, securing their qualification for the round of 16.
The club wants a more experienced coach to go until the end of the season, then validate the arrival of a size that could be Mauricio Pochettino, the coach of Paris Saint-Germain, some media believe they know.
According to the website The Athletic, Rangnick, former manager of RB Leipzig, is already in agreement with ManU officials and is only waiting for the green light from Lokomotiv to be released from his current contract.
In the best-case scenario, he will not be able to be on the bench at Chelsea on Sunday, due to the delays required to obtain a work permit in the UK. Carrick will therefore probably continue his mission for a few more days.
Solskjaer was sacked on Sunday the day after a 4-1 loss at low-ranked Watford. The Red Devils have just lost four of their last five Premier League games and are in 8th place, 12 points behind Chelsea.
The recruits of this summer have not yet made the difference, except perhaps Cristiano Ronaldo, author of several important goals, while Jadon Sancho is still in the adaptation phase and Raphaël Varane has been injured for a long time.
Rangnick is well respected by his compatriots Jurgen Klopp (Liverpool) and Thomas Tuchel (Chelsea): “He is one of the best German coaches, if not the best,” Klopp has already said of him.
After having coached Stuttgart, Schalke and Hoffenheim, Rangnick has spent most of the last ten years at the helm of two clubs controlled by Red Bull, RB Leipzig and RB Salzburg. He moved to Moscow to everyone’s surprise last summer.
