Former Manchester City defender Micah Richards has urged Harry Maguire to temporarily hand over the armband to Cristiano Ronaldo. The Manchester United captain has suffered a prolonged relegation in the form of him this season. Maguire’s struggles have coincided with bad luck for the Red Devils.
In his column of El Daily MailRichards said Maguire needs to take the weight of the captaincy off his shoulders for now.
“I’m not asking for Harry to be stripped of the role entirely. Maybe he could use the weight off his shoulders for the rest of this season. He has not crossed the line; he should not be punished. But the perspective must apply to what he is experiencing and the impact he is having on his form,” Richards wrote.
He continued:
“For the time being, a break from responsibility would do him good. He needs support to get back to being the standout defender we know and hope he will be again.”
