Manchester United terminates contract with striker Mason Greenwood following internal investigation

Manchester United will release striker Mason Greenwood, who was acquitted of attempted rape in February this year. The club’s management decided to terminate cooperation with the 21-year-old player after a six-month internal investigation.

United already suspended Greenwood in January 2022, when the allegations against him appeared on social networks. Last October, the forward, with one start for England’s senior national team, was charged with attempted rape, coercive behavior and assault.

His prosecution was dropped in February and the club said it would conduct its own investigation before deciding on Greenwood’s possible return to the team. “Everyone involved, including Mason, is aware that it would be difficult for him to build on his career at Manchester United. That is why we have agreed together that it would be better for him to continue outside of Old Trafford. We will now work with Mason to to achieve that result,” the club said in a statement today.

Greenwood, who has played for United since the age of six, admitted in a statement to British media that he had “made mistakes”. “I did not do what I have been accused of. Today’s decision was the result of a joint process between Manchester United, my family and myself. It will be best for all of us if I continue my career outside of Old Trafford, where my presence will not be disruptive to the club ,” said the former England youth international.
