Erik ten Hag is entering the new year with Manchester United with a hangover. The English record champion lost 2-1 to Nottingham Forest in the Premier League on Saturday.
After the heroic victory over Aston Villa on Boxing Day (3-2), Manchester United seemed to have recovered from a bad series, but at the City Ground in Nottingham United’s foundation once again turned out to be very shaky.
Under the watchful eye of new shareholder Sir Jim Ratcliffe, United made a powerless impression, especially in the first half, against the Premier League low-flyer. Nottingham Forest was just unable to create a chance.
That changed after halftime. After Diogo Dalot hit the post with a long shot, the ball fell in at the other end. Nicolás Domínguez found the far corner and left goalkeeper André Onana without a chance.
With the help of Nottingham Forest, United came alongside fifteen minutes later. Goalkeeper Matt Turner simply played the ball into the feet of Alejandro Garnacho, who enabled Marcus Rashford to score: 1-1.
Yet United lost for the ninth time this season in the Premier League: Morgan Gibbs-White scored nicely in the 82nd minute. Coach Ten Hag’s team will therefore enter the new year as number seven in the competition. The gap to leader Liverpool is eleven points, although United has played one more game.
