Erik ten Hag hopes that the management of Manchester United will enable him to make investments in the group of players in the summer. The manager knows that in the Premier League standing still means going backwards.
“We are going in the right direction, but we are not yet where we want to be. There is still a long way to go. Fortunately, there is room for improvement when I look at both the team and the individual players,” Ten Hag reported on Sunday evening to English media after the 2-1 win over Fulham in the last round of the Premier League.
Because of that victory, Manchester United finished third, so that ‘The Red Devils’ will make their appearance in the Champions League after the summer. That coveted ticket was already secured midweek by a 4-1 win over Chelsea.
Ten Hag also guided the club to the League Cup win in his first season and will duel with Manchester City at Wembley on Saturday for the final victory in the FA Cup tournament.
The ex-trainer of FC Utrecht and Ajax, among others, obviously also overlooks that final. “The club knows that investments must be made to compete in this tough competition at the top. Because other clubs do that too.”
United spent nothing during the winter transfer window
Ten Hag did not have a pleasant feeling about the winter transfer period, when Manchester United did not spend a pound on reinforcements. That also applied to only four other Premier League clubs.
A number of players were hired, including Wout Weghorst. “In the winter, everyone invested heavily, except us. The fact that we managed to make it nevertheless makes me very proud.”
Uncertainty surrounding the takeover may complicate Manchester United’s transfer activities. The Glazer family wants to get rid of the club, but lately there has been no progress in the process. Qatari Sheikh Jassim Bin Hamad Al Thani and the INEOS Group are in the race to take over the English record champion.
