Recently, it has been reported that Manchester United plan to exercise the option year in Victor Nilsson Lindelöf’s contract. According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, the Premier League club have now done so.
Romano writes on New Year’s Day that United have sent a formal letter to Nilsson Lindelöf’s representatives announcing that they have exercised the extension option. Thus, Lindelöf’s contract no longer expires this summer, but in the summer of 2025.
But not everyone is happy with it.
On New Year’s Eve, before the club completed the formalities, United icon Gary Neville expressed dismay at the club’s decision to extend Nilsson Lindelöf.
“If United want to extend with Lindelöf and Varane (on a reduced salary), I’m worried. We need to freshen up the back line as much as possible. These two are not bad footballers by any means, but a message has to be sent to everyone – both inside and the outside of the club – that the level of recent years will not be tolerated,” writes Neville.
Manchester United have not yet officially announced that Lindelöf’s contract has been extended.
