Manchester United kicked off pre-season with confidence on Wednesday, beating historic rivals Leeds United 2-0 in Oslo.
Mason Mount, our new player, started his first match with the team and appeared well and almost scored before giving way to his teammates in the second half as the coach changed the lineup completely in the second half at O’Ollivale.
Two young substitutes, Naum Imran and Joe Hugill, scored the goals for the Reds after the break as they displayed the attacking finesse they have proven for the Under-21s in Premier League 2.
Charlie Savage, who captained the bench in midfield, and Isak Hansen-Arwin, who assisted Emran’s opening goal, are among the academy players trying to impress Ten Hag in the absence of several senior players who were still playing for their countries a few weeks ago.
first half
After honoring both clubs’ legend Gordon McQueen, who passed away last month, what has been a very competitive encounter has begun. We got our first free kick against Leeds after just 20 seconds, we had the first 45 minutes led by Mount.
But this trip to Oslo wasn’t just an occasion for Mount and the academy youth to shine, it was also an opportunity for players who enjoyed successful loan spells last season and are now back in the team, such as Alvaro Fernandes, Amad and Hannibal.
The latter had two scoring chances in the first 20 minutes. After a three-way collaboration, it started from Mount, who passed a ball to Amad, who crossed for Hannibal, and the Tunisian hit it directly, but it was saved by Leeds goalkeeper Christopher Clayson, who was playing in his native Norway.
Later, Hannibal prevented Leeds from advancing with a timely tackle to stop Luis Sinistera from making it 1-2 with Ian Poveda.
In between those attacks, Mount came astonishingly close to scoring his first goal by pressing and winning the ball from Leeds’ center back Jeremiah Chiloqua Mullen and volleying the ball over Clayson but it was over the goal. Amad later tried his luck with a curling shot from the right but once again it was too high for the goal.
Second half
Ten Hag made a planned 11 changes in the first half, while his newly appointed counterpart Daniel Farke kept one of his players on the field at full back Cody Drame. Among the players he introduced in the second period were senior striker Patrick Bamford and former United winger Daniel James.
Despite the changes, the format of the match was not affected and the United players returned like a storm in the second half.
Imran calmly opened the scoring in the 67th minute, firing the ball with his left foot past Leeds substitute goalkeeper Danny van den Heuvel.
The scorer later turned playmaker when Shula Schuriter’s low-volley from the right saw Hugill slot the ball into the net from near the penalty spot, with nine minutes remaining.
Leeds player Archie Gray tried to surprise United goalkeeper Mate Kovar, but the ball went wide of the goal.
Rhys Bennett nearly sealed the victory with a third goal for us when his header hit the post in stoppage time, as Tenhag’s men finished 2-0 in their first match of the summer from eight pre-season games you can watch on MUTV this summer.
