Manchester United put a proud fee of 95 million euros on the table from Ajax Amsterdam for Antony (22) last summer. So far, however, the winger has not been able to meet expectations. An ex-professional attacks the Brazilian.
“These are all tricks without use,” Darren Bent criticized the way the right winger played and his often ineffective tricks in an interview with the British broadcaster talksport. “People call these players YouTube footballers. Is that him? A bit,” said the former Tottenham, Derby and Aston Villa centre-forward.
While Darren Bent has scored over 200 goals for his clubs in England in his career, Antony has three goals after eleven Premier League games. Actually a decent rate for a newcomer who still has to get used to the Premier League. However, he last met in early October. Since then, Antony’s form curve has been pointing downwards.
Erik ten Hag praises Antony
Erik ten Hag was nevertheless satisfied with the performance of his new signing. “He played a really good game and was a threat to the opponents’ defence,” said the Manchester United head coach after beating Nottingham Forrest 3-0 in the Cup semi-final first leg.
Antony showed “some good actions and combinations”, said ten Hag: “We want to see that from him more often. We are working on making him appear more dynamic.” He was satisfied with Antony’s performances in the past few weeks.
