Manchester Mayor ‘loses’ to Boris Johnson | Abroad

The coronavirus is currently spreading rapidly in the United Kingdom. There, authorities reported more than 21,000 new corona infections on Tuesday. Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s government is trying to prevent another nationwide lockdown by taking tougher measures in hard-hit areas.

England recently introduced a new system with stricter measures to prevent the spread of the corona virus. Three alarm levels have been created (medium, high and very high). Until now, the alarm phase ‘very high’ applies only in Liverpool and Lancashire. Manchester also has an alarming number of infections.

‘Disappointing’

Mayor Andy Burnham complained that the government was not offering enough money to compensate the poorest residents in the area. “It cannot be right to close the places where people work, to shut down people’s businesses, without giving them enough support to take care of themselves,” said the local administrator.

According to Burnham, ministers eventually pulled the plug from the consultations. Housing Minister Robert Jenrick, in turn, lashed out at the mayor. He called it “disappointing” that the local leader is “unwilling to do whatever it takes to stop the virus spreading in Greater Manchester.”

Boris Johnson

Prime Minister Johnson has now made it clear that the corona policy in the area is being tightened anyway. “I can announce that Greater Manchester is falling very high below alert levels,” said the Conservative leader. That means some pubs have to close and people are advised not to travel to or from the region.

Johnson says he regrets the conflict with the local authorities. “We would have a better chance of beating the virus if we work together.”
