Manchester City won a lawsuit against the Premier League over financial regulations

Manchester City sued the PL group in February, but this was only announced this summer. The last four league champions argued against the validity of rules which prohibit clubs from entering into sponsorship deals of more than market value with companies owned by or associated with the owner of club.

The ban aims to prevent the clubs from hiding donations directly from the owners, which is a breach of the rules regarding financial fair play.

It was adopted in 2021

The current rules were adopted in 2021 after Newcastle acquired Saudi Arabian owners. City officials have argued that they are breaking competition law and discriminating against clubs based outside of London.

Manchester City, whose owners are from Abu Dhabi, also said in the lawsuit that clubs with ties to the Gulf states are being discriminated against.

In addition, the light blue attacked the voting rules of the Premier League, according to several British media. All decisions require a two-thirds majority (14 out of 20 clubs), and City are said to have referred to this democratic model as the “tyranny of the majority”.
