Manchester City defender Benjamin Mendy (28) was charged with seven counts of rape, a sexual assault and an attempted rape. He has now been acquitted in several of the cases.
Mendy was found not guilty of seven of the charges. It concerned six accusations of rape and one sexual assault.
The jury was unable to reach a verdict on two of the counts. These come up in round two of the court proceedings. It concerns accusations of one rape and one attempted rape.
This begins on June 26 and is expected to last two to three weeks.
In August 2021, Mendy was suspended by the club pending the court proceedings. His last game for the time being was against Tottenham on 15 August of the same month.
The charges relate to incidents that must have occurred between October 2020 and August 2021.
The Frenchman has dismissed the charges and claimed his innocence. He believes the intercourse took place with mutual consent.
Manchester City writes in one press release that they take note of the judgment, but that they cannot comment anything further as not all points in the cases have been decided.
